What is premature ejaculation?
Ejaculation is the discharge of semen from a man’s scrotum during orgasm. When ejaculation occurs sooner than a man or his partner expects, this is called premature ejaculation. In the U.S., about 1 in 3 men 18 to 59 years old suffers from premature ejaculation. Premature ejaculation is also known as rapid ejaculation, premature climax or early ejaculation.

Premature Ejaculation and Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
Premature ejaculation and Erectile Dysfunction are both sexual dysfunctions. Many people easily confuse premature ejaculation with ED, believing that they are just different degrees of the same disease. But the truth is that they are not the same. Premature ejaculation is an ejaculation disorder, while impotence is an erectile disorder. And their treatments are different. However, some may experience premature ejaculation with ED.

The symptoms of premature ejaculation
The main symptom of premature ejaculation is being unable to delay ejaculation regularly for more than three minutes after penetration. And it might occur in all sexual situations, even during masturbation. But if it sometimes or seldom occurs to you, don’t be too worried.

Premature ejaculation can be classified as lifelong and acquired
Lifelong PE means you have had this experience all or nearly beginning with the first sexual intercourse.
Acquired PE means ejaculation is normal before but developed premature ejaculation eventually.
What causes the premature ejaculation?
We still don’t know the specific cause of premature ejaculation. But health care providers believe that mainly caused by complex psychological and biological factors.

Psychological causes:
Psychological factors that might play a role include:

Early sexual experiences
Sexual abuse
Poor body image
Depression
Worrying about premature ejaculation
Guilty feelings that can cause you to rush through sex
Some psychological factors may be temporary. For example, a person may have experienced PE during early sexual experiences, but as they grew older and had more sexual encounters, they learned how to help delay ejaculation.

Others that may cause PE include:
Erectile dysfunction. Being anxious about getting and keeping an erection might form a pattern of rushing to ejaculate. The pattern can be difficult to change.
Anxiety/Pressure. The anxiety may be about sexual performance or related to other issues.
Relationship problems. If you have apparent contradiction with your partner currently, it may also lead to PE.
Biological causes:
Several biological factors might contribute to premature ejaculation. They may include:

Irregular hormone levels
Irregular levels of brain chemicals
Swelling and infection of the prostate or urethra
Inherited traits
How to treat premature ejaculation?
Behavioral techniques, medications, and psychological therapy are the most common ways to treat premature ejaculation. Finding the treatment or combination of treatments that work for you might take time.

Behavioral therapy
Behavioral therapy uses exercises to help build a tolerance to delay ejaculation. The goal is to help you train your body away from premature ejaculation.

Pelvic floor exercises (Not only women can do the exercise)
Weak pelvic floor muscles might make it harder to delay ejaculation. Pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises) can help strengthen these muscles. (If you are a woman and want to Pelvic floor exercise, click Kegel Ball.)

To do these exercises:
tighten the pelvic floor muscles and hold for 3 mins. When your muscles get stronger, try doing Kegel exercises while sitting, standing, or walking.
focus on tightening only your pelvic floor muscles. Be careful not to flex the muscles in your abdomen, thighs, or buttocks.
At least three sets of 10 repetitions a day.
The pause-squeeze exercises
Begin sexual activity, including stimulating the penis, until you feel almost ready to ejaculate.
Then you or your partner can squeeze the end of your penis where the head joins the shaft. Keep squeezing for several seconds until the urge to ejaculate passes.
Repeat the squeeze process as needed.
Practice as often as possible until it becomes a habit, which will help delay your ejaculation.
If the pause-squeeze technique makes you feel painful or uncomfortable, try the stop-start technique. It involves stopping sexual stimulation just before ejaculation. Then wait until the level of arousal has diminished and start again.

Medical therapy
No drugs have been approved in the U.S. to treat PE. Still, there are a number of drugs, numbing creams, and numbing sprays that may slow ejaculation in men with PE.

Oral medications
Many drugs don’t cure premature ejaculation directly, but they can delay your orgasm. These include antidepressants, pain relievers, and drugs for erectile dysfunction. These medicines can be taken each day or before sex, and the dose depends on your condition and your health care provider. PE can return if you stop taking the drugs.

Numbing Creams or Sprays
Numbing creams or sprays can be used to treat PE. Apply them on the tip of your penis for 10 to 15 minutes before sex to reduce your sensation and help delay PE. Don’t leave the creams and spray on your penis longer than the suggested time, which might make your erection disappear. Remember washing away the things on your penis before penetration, or you can use a condom to avoid your partner’s vagina contact with the cream.

(For any medication needs, please consult your physician.)

Psychological therapy
Psychological therapy is a way to work through the feelings and emotions that may lead problems with sexual relationship. You can talk your relationships and experiences with your mental health provider. A good conversation can help you reduce anxiety and stress about sex performance. It can also help couples refix their relationship and get to know each other better. Counseling is most likely to help when it’s used in combination with drug therapy.

Final words
It is not a big deal if you or your partner have this problem currently, it is curable, so don’t be sad. But if you or your partner are undergoing this tough period, don’t focus too much on your penis. Focus on oral sex and sex toys while seeking treatment for premature ejaculation. This can reduce your anxiety and stress. Anyway, sex is not fundamental to love, support and understanding are.
