In order to hopefully build trust with our users, and to remove any doubt that we created this platform purely for profit and advertising purposes, WhatToy vows to keep this page updated with a list of all networks we are affiliated with, any sponsorships that we take, list all the possible variables WhatToy has when it comes to rating and reviewing elements.
Things to know
Your privacy comes first. Your data belongs to you, and we will never share any personal data with anyone. Due to the nature of the topic surrounding this website, privacy is a very important factor and we will always take that as our first priorty, when it comes to security as well as statistics and analytics.
Export/copy your data. You are welcome to download a copy of your data from WhatToy, you can do so by navigating to your settings page, going to the Account Info section and clicking the Request Copy of Personal Data link.
No shady business. We will never accept compensation in exchange for removing, tweaking or editing reviews, ratings, information on anything on this website. While we give tools for Brands and Stores to manage their pages, they have no access to removing negative feedback. Again, transparency is key for making this website work properly. All feedback is good feedback, even critical feedback. Unless a user is clearly creating fake reviews or lying about things in their reviews, they will not be silenced or removed.
Difference between User and Critic ratings
On WhatToy, there are two kind of ratings: User and Critic ratings. User ratings, as the name suggests, is everyone using the platform to submit ratings and reviews normally. Critics on the other hand, are hand-picked users who have shown they are passionate about their toys, articulate in the way they express their thoughts and are not sponsored or incentivized to talk highly about specific products or brands.
We decided to split these two kinds of ratings because we saw that a lot of users wanted the ability to filter out opinions of established and verified authors, as sometimes, normal reviews can seem disingenuine, short, etc.
This does not mean user ratings are not important, on the contrary, every rating is counted towards the overall ranking of a product within it's category.
As a user progresses in rank within the site (depending on various factors, such as if they are established or not, how many reviews they have written, etc) their ratings gain more weight compared to "Novice"-ranked users. These weights range from 1.1 to 1.8 * the base rate weight. This means, a user who is a "Member"-rank, their ratings will have a 0.10% more weight when calculating rankings compared to users who are "Novice"-ranked.
How are ratings calculated?
First of all, it's important to note that a product or store has a "grace" period. This means, a new product will not be added to any ranking lists until it has reached either a minimum number of ratings, and/or a minimum number of days has passed since the product was released. We do this to prevent new products from getting pushed to the top of all ranks due to the novelty aspect of it.
We recommend users that, before rating and reviewing a product, that they at least use it a dozen times or so. This will ensure your rating is accurate. A lot of toys have a known "Break-in Period", which means your first time using a toy might not be as good as you hoped for, but after multiple uses, you'll start to enjoy it more and more. We highly encourage this as it creates more accurate ratings.
If a product (or store) has passed the criteria to start appearing on ranking lists, the satisfaction rating is calculated by taking the Overall Satisfaction of all the ratings made for said product, adding weight to those ratings which were made by established users (as mentioned in the previous section) and finally dividing it by the number of ratings made in total. Rating averages (default) are calculated by taking the average median of all the rating categories for each rating made for the product, adding the weight variations as mentioned above, and again, dividing the result by the number of total ratings.
If you prefer seeing ratings based on the "Overall Satisfaction" of users, instead of the average of all categories, you can change your settings at any time within your Settings page.
How are critics chosen?
Critics are chosen based on their history on WhatToy. It largely depends on the quality of their reviews, if they have verified their collection and not just writing fake reviews about things they do not own, etc. Being a Critic gives your ratings more weight compared to "Novice"-ranked users. Critics gain access to a platform that makes publishing and managing many reviews at once easier. As a critic, you also gain access to a platform which will allow you to speak directly with brands, and possibly receiving toys/products for free for you to test and rate.
If you are interested in becoming a Critic, just start posting reviews and ratings on the site. We actively monitor the top reviewers, and will reach out to you to see if you want to become a Critic once you meet the criteria. Critics do not get paid, unlike Editors.
How is your data handled?
We take your data very seriously, especially considering the nature of the website and the adult-oriented content on here. Furthermore, since we are a company founded in the EU, we fully comply with the GDPR, and Spanish LOPD, and handle data in accordance with the data protection principles. For that reason, WhatToy will:
- process personal data lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner;
- collect personal data for specified, explicit and legitimate purposes only, and will not process it in a way that is incompatible with those legitimate purposes;
- only process the personal data that is adequate, relevant and necessary for the relevant purposes;
- keep accurate and up to date personal data, and take reasonable steps to ensure that inaccurate personal data are deleted or corrected without delay;
- take appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure that personal data are kept secure and protected against unauthorised or unlawful processing, and against accidental loss, destruction or damage;
- demonstrate compliance with the above data protection principles.
Handling of WhatToy Giveaway winners' data
If a user participates in the monthly giveaway hosted by WhatToy, and is one of the winners, the user is expected to provide a shipping address in order to receive their chosen prize. The winner's details are not made public, this includes their name and address, the only information that is made public is their WhatToy account username, their chosen prize and the date of winning said prize.
When a winner provides their details in order to receive their prize, said information will ONLY be forwarded to a third-party sex toy store retailer, or brand, in order to ship the prize to the winner. This information will not be shared with anyone else, nor saved indefinitely on the website. We only work with trusted and verified retailers that have a good record. After the winner has confirmed they have received their prize, this information is removed from the platform.

Application and User Security
- SSL/TLS Encryption: All data is passed over secured, encrypted SSL/TLS connections. Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) technology protect communications by using both server authentication and data encryption. This ensures that user data in transit is safe, secure, and available only to intended recipients.
- User Authentication: User data on our database is logically segregated by account-based access rules. User accounts have unique usernames and passwords that must be entered each time a user logs on. We issue a session cookie only to record encrypted authentication information for the duration of a specific session. The session cookie does not include the password of the user.
- User Passwords: User application passwords have minimum complexity requirements. Passwords are individually salted and encrypted, this means, we will never have access to the plaintext version of the password used by the user.
- Data Encryption: Certain sensitive user data, such as account passwords, is stored in encrypted format.
- Data Portability: WhatToy.com enables you to export some of your data from our system so that you can back it up, or use it with other applications, you can request a copy of your data within your account settings page.
- Privacy: We have a comprehensive privacy policy that provides a very transparent view of how we handle your data, including how we use your data, who we share it with, and how long we retain it.
Physical Security
- Data Centers: Our information systems infrastructure (servers, networking equipment, etc.) is collocated at Servers.com data centers located throughout the United States.
- Data Center Security: Servers.com data centers are staffed and surveilled 24/7. Access is secured by security guards, visitors logs, and entry requirements such as passcards and biometric recognition.
- Environmental Controls: Servers.com data centers are maintained at controlled temperatures and humidity ranges which are continuously monitored for variations. Smoke and fire detection and response systems are in place.
- Location: All user data is currently stored on servers located in the United States, there is an offsite backup that is stored in a secure location in Spain.
Network Security
- Uptime: Continuous uptime monitoring, with immediate escalation to WhatToy.com staff for any downtime.
- Testing: System functionality and design changes are verified in an isolated test “sandbox” environment and subject to functional and security testing prior to deployment to active production systems.
- Firewall: Firewall restricts access to all ports except 80 (http) and 443 (https).
- Patching: Latest security patches are applied to all operating system and application files to mitigate newly discovered vulnerabilities.
- Access Control: Secure VPN, multifactor authentication, and role-based access is enforced for systems management by authorized engineering staff.
- Logging and Auditing: Central logging systems capture and archive all internal systems access including any failed authentication attempts.
Storage Security
- Backup Frequency: Backups occur hourly internally, and daily to a centralized backup system for storage in multiple geographically disparate sites, stored for 7 days.
- Production Redundancy: Data stored on a RAID 10 array. Duplicated on cloud storage devices.
Software Development Practices
We code in PHP, JavaScript (jQuery) and MySQL database. All software, processing languages, are running the latest stable version. The platform was created from scratch, custom made for this specific purpose. All code has gone through rigorous testing before deployment to the public and official website.

On WhatToy, we have added a user rank system, to add some distinguishing to new accounts to users who have been on the site for a long time and to those that have contributed to the community! Here's the full list of current ranks available on the site.

How is product availability determined?
As you may have noticed, there are many Stores listed on the website. From these stores, when available, we use feeds and API's to grab their latest stock, prices and product releases. These prices and availability details are shown on Product Details' pages on WhatToy.com, below the product's characteristics (or variations, if it has any). You may have noticed that this list is not ordered alphabetically, rather, it seems to change depending on the product, why is that? Well, we've written an algorithm to sort the availability options depending on the user's preferences. The exact sorting algorithm is as follows (the top being highest priority, the bottom being lowest):
- Store is an affiliate or sponsor of WhatToy.com.
- Product in stock at target shop/store.
- Store is available (ships to) the user's location.
- Product price (lowest = better, all currencies converted to USD value).
- Store rating on WhatToy.
- Number of ratings of said Store on WhatToy.
Affiliate networks we are a part of
To be able to afford purchasing toys for reviews, hosting the monthly giveaways, paying the editors and keeping server costs / third party expenses, we sign up to various affiliate networks for online stores. Affiliate networks are platforms that act as a middle man between the publisher (us, WhatToy) and the advertiser (the merchant, stores, brands, etc). Whenever you purchase a product via one of the affiliated stores, after having clicked the tracking link we post on WhatToy, we gain a % of the sale you generated for the advertiser. This extra cost does not reflect on the final price of the product, this means, you are not paying more for having clicked any links on our site. Merely, the advertiser gives us a portion of the sale as a "thank you" for directing the customer to them.
At WhatToy, our mission was to create a platform that is focused around the community, not around making money. What Stores are eligible to be listed?
In order for a store to be listed on WhatToy, they need to pass a few basic requirements. We set these requirements to prevent any untrustworthy or non-established sites from being listed on WhatToy.
The store/shop needs to have been in business for at least 1 year and have made at least 1000 sales.
The store may not be a drop-shipper, as in, a store that doesn't handle the products directly, but rather forwards all sales/orders to a third-party and takes a commission. While we have nothing against drop-shippers, we do not believe they can offer a level of quality and service that should be expected when it comes to the nature of the products in question. Customers should be able to deal with the company directly, and not with an intermediary.
The store should also offer an API or Feed so that WhatToy can periodically check which products are available on said store, get their current prices and stock/availability status (The exception to this is if the store or website is an official site by the brand or manufacturer dedicated to a single product, where obviously they don't update the products and prices on a daily basis).
